Subliminal Spam? Marketing ploy?

A caring family member forwarded an email, that yelled of great advice, and almost when I clicked "forward" the analyst in me kicked in.... :)

Too many red flags to be true:

  1. looks like subliminal spam ("Bank of America" and "Fox")
  2. what is “FOX TV” a news program? a digest from your cable company? one of many Fox network channels?
  3. who called the bank? Message has been forwarded around multiple times. The one forwarding to you is not the original person who “was skeptical” and now is a dedicated believer (forwarding testimonials takes time…special if to everyone.)
  4. missing: advice to verify with you local law enforcement office; e.g., sheriff's office--they are the ones who will be dispatched responding to your call.
  5. it encourages you to forward the email to everyone, which implies, all your email contacts.
  6. the email shows formatting, can you see if there’s any hidden code or cookie that it’s being passed around?

Now, what do you think?

------------------------------------------------------- PIN NUMBER REVERSAL (GOOD TO KNOW) Subject: Fw: Pin number Reversal ( good to know) If you have and use an ATM Card to withdraw money and you're being forced to get cash for an invader, you may want to know this...!!! I was skeptical about this one and called The Bank of America to verify it - they told me it is true - it's something that has evolved fairly recently. If you should ever be forced by a robber to withdraw money from an ATM machine, you can notify the police by entering your Pin # in reverse. For example if your pin number is 1234 then you would put in 4321 The ATM recognizes that your pin number is backwards from the ATM card you placed in the machine. The machine will still give you the money you requested, but unknown to the robber, the police will be immediately dispatched to help you. This information was recently broadcasted on FOX TV and it states that it is seldom used because people don't know it exists. Please pass this along to everyone possible. -------------------------------------------------------
